Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S23

A brand-new Samsung Galaxy S23 comes in a lightweight paper box containing only the device, a USB Type-C cable for charging or data transfer, and a SIM ejection tool. Recall that Samsung stopped including chargers and headphones in their packaging some years ago. Therefore, you may need to buy a 25W Samsung charger separately.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has an aesthetic design that is appealing to the eyes. It features a 6.1-inch 1080p AMOLED screen, an armoured aluminium frame, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 panels. At first glance, the S23 looks similar to the Galaxy S22 from the front. However, the significant differences are easily observed from the back.

On the Galaxy S23, you will not find the metal housing containing the three rear cameras of the S22. Instead, small, tiny metal rings were used to surround the cameras. Sadly, the cameras are not levelled with the back glass. Therefore, placing the Galaxy S23 on a desk with a case is only advisable.

Galaxy S23 features the power and volume buttons on the right, with the microphone at the top. At the bottom, you will find the dual-SIM slot, a USB-C port, primary and secondary microphones and a second speaker. The Samsung Galaxy S23 design is awe-inspiring, sturdy and IP68-rated.

Display

Like the S22, the Galaxy S23 features an impressive 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X, with a peak brightness of 35 per cent higher than the S22. It has a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels and 422 ppi density. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and supports a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a wide colour gamut.

The Galaxy S23 consistently offers accurate colours through the DCI-P3 and sRG. It also has two Motion Smoothness modes (Adaptive and Standard Refresh Rates). The device automatically switches between the two modes as the need arises. In Adaptive mode, the Galaxy S23 can rise to 120Hz. However, the Standard mode can only do 60Hz.

Camera

At the back of the Samsung Galaxy S23, you will find a three-camera setup that looks identical to those on the Galaxy S22. The primary camera features a 50MP Samsung S5KGN3 1/1.57-inch sensor paired with a 23mm f/1.8 stabilised lens. Its telephoto camera utilises a 10MP Samsung S5K3K1 1/3.94-inch sensor and a 69mm f/2.4 stabilised lens.

Unlike the primary and telephoto cameras, the ultrawide camera uses a 12MP 1/2.55-inch Sony IMX564 sensor and a 12mm f/2.2 lens. The front camera was upgraded over the S22, featuring a 12MP Samsung S5K3LU sensor and a 25mm f/2.2 lens. The new selfie camera has a higher resolution than the Galaxy S22, offering better dynamic range.

Both the front and rear cameras support Night Mode. The camera app supports Auto Night Mode while in a low-light environment. All the four cameras on the Galaxy S23 can record 4K60 videos. In addition, the primary camera can also record 8K30. The device also supports HDR10+ video recording, making it an excellent choice for anyone who likes capturing images.

Operating system

Samsung Galaxy S23 runs on One UI v.5.1 based on Android 13.0. It introduced new widgets and improvements over the previous version. One UI 5.1 improved the overall performance of the S23 operating system. It features a better contrast, new app icons, and introduced illustrations that make it easy to identify apps or read text.

Another significant improvement over the previous version of the operating system and One UI is that widgets can now be stacked. The default dialer has been upgraded to pick an animated background for each contact, making it easy to identify a caller quickly.

Android 13 and One UI 5.1 significantly upgrade over those in the Galaxy S22. They brought an improved connectivity and multi-tasking experience. It introduced several new features, including Modes and Routines, similar to Focus Modes found on iPhones. The device is a masterpiece worth every penny you spend purchasing it.

Chipset

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset featuring the Qualcomm SoC is the power behind Samsung Galaxy S23. Tests revealed that the process is 40% more efficient with 35% higher performance than the Gen 1. The processor supports LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0 faster memory technologies.

Samsung Galaxy S23 has one of the most powerful processors in any Android mobile phone. Its Adreno 740 GPU is clocked at 719MHz, while the GPU is 45 per cent more efficient than its predecessor.

Storage

When purchasing the Galaxy S23 smartphone, you can choose between the 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. Since the device has no card slot for storage expansion, it is essential to consider your usage pattern carefully. All the storage options have the same 8GB RAM. However, the 256GB and 512GB support UFS 4.0, while the 128GB version relies on UFS 3.1.

Battery

The Galaxy S23 may be better in terms of battery life. It features a 3,900mAh battery. This is 200mAh more than the 3,700mAh found in the Galaxy S22 and 100mAh short of the S21 4,000mAh. When on standby, the Galaxy S23 battery can last up to 101 hours, 30 hours and 52 minutes of talk time, 16 hours and 20 minutes of web browsing, and 17 hours and 5 minutes of video playback.

Samsung Galaxy S23 has a maximum charging power of 25W and supports wireless and reversed-wired charging. With a 25W charger, the device charges from zero to 30 per cent in 15 minutes and takes another 15 minutes to reach 57 per cent.

Samsung Galaxy S23+ Review
Another impressive member of the Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup is the Galaxy S23+. Although there is no significant difference between it and the standard S23, there has been a substantial upgrade over the Galaxy S22+. Samsung released the device on February 17, 2023. Let’s look at the Galaxy S23+ specifications before reviewing other vital features. This will help us to understand what distinguishes the device from its predecessor, the S22+, and how it stands in comparison to other members of the Galaxy S23 lineup.

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S23+

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in a thin black cardboard box. Like other members of the Samsung Galaxy family, the device comes in minimalistic packaging that includes only a few accessories. As you open the box, you will find only the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone, a USB-C cable, and a SIM ejection tool.

Aside from the few items mentioned above, there is nothing else you will find in the Galaxy S23 Ultra box. Check the video to see how to unbox the Galaxy S23 Ultra and how to remove the screen cover that comes with the device.

Design

In terms of design, the Galaxy S23 Ultra features some little adjustments that distinguish it from the other models. One such feature is a flat display and very slim bezels. The Galaxy S23 Ultra also features a redesigned back panel that matches the front shape, helping maintain symmetry.

Samsung retained the Armor Aluminium we saw on the S23+ and also covered the front and back panels with Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The Galaxy S23 Ultra also features a more prominent camera setup and a different layout.

You will still find the power and control buttons at their regular positions. The power and volume buttons are positioned on the right, while the left contains nothing. Other things like the USB-C port, the SIM card tray, microphones, and the primary speaker are all at the bottom.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in many colours: black, green, lavender, and cream. It has an IP68 rating and can resist water for 30 minutes if submerged at a depth of 1.5 metres. This does not mean you should intentionally immerse your Galaxy S23 Ultra in water.

Display

Samsung does not disappoint with display technologies, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra is no exception. The device has a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 1440 x 3088 pixels resolution. It features a QHD+ panel with a 19.3:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 501 ppi.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra has a maximum brightness of 1200 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM), a peak brightness of 1750 nits, and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The display supports HDR10+. There is also a Vision Booster that uses the amount of light on the screen to analyse the image on display and apply different tone mapping to improve shadows and colour accuracy.

The display technology can utilise a Vivid colour mode for DCI-P3 and a Natural mode for sRGB. It also supports Full HD streams, making the device ideal for anyone who enjoys streaming HD videos on Netflix.

Camera

The Galaxy S3 Ultra features a quad camera setup, a 200MP primary shooter, and a Samsung HP2 sensor. The sensor has a Tetra2pixel RGB Pattern colour filter and captures 12MP images by default. It also features a Super QPD autofocus, which it uses to detect vertical or horizontal changes in an image’s direction and to allow for an efficient autofocus.

Aside from the 200MP primary camera, which has a focal length of 23mm and an f/1,7 aperture, the Ultrawide camera now has an IMX564 with a 1/2.55-inch sensor and dual autofocus. Each of the teles features a 10MP sensor.

There is no significant difference between the camera app on the Galaxy S23 Ultra and what you will find on other members of the S23 lineup. Switching camera modes takes only a left and right swipe, as usual. You also have an option to remove any of the modes from the viewfinder. Swiping up or down switches between the front and back cameras.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is capable of capturing quality images in daylight. A night mode also automatically pops up when you try capturing images in a low-light environment. All cameras on the Galaxy S23 Ultra can record 4K videos at 6fps, while the primary camera can record as high as 8K at 30fps.

Operating system

It is no news that the Galaxy S23 lineup was launched on Android 13 and runs on Samsung One UI 5.1. The software introduced new features and looks great on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Since the software on the S23 Ultra is the same as the one found on other members of the S23 lineup, you can check the operating system subsection under the S23 and S23+ review section for more details.

Chipset

Like other Samsung Galaxy S23 family members, the S23 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and features a Qualcomm SoC. The chipset has the X3, 2xA715, 2xA710, and 3xA510 Cortex CPU cores. The chipset is 40 percent more efficient and offers 35 per cent better performance than its predecessor.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra also features the Adreno 740 GPU, which is 45 per cent more efficient and 25 per cent better performance than previous versions. You will surely enjoy the Galaxy S23 Ultra because of its fast speed and high performance.

Storage

Samsung deployed the LPDDR5X fast memory technology and UFS 4.0 on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The device comes in several storage options that include 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. For the 256GB, you can select between 8GB or 12GB RAM, while the 512GB and 1TB only have a 12GB RAM version.

It is noteworthy that among the three members of the Galaxy S23 lineup, only the S23 Ultra features 1TB storage. The 1TB is based on UFS 4.0. Because 8GB and 12GB RAM variants are available, it is essential to consider your usage pattern to identify the best one for your needs and lifestyle.

Battery

The Galaxy S23 Ultra retains the 5,000mAh battery we saw on its predecessor, the S22 Ultra. However, the battery lasts longer due to the reliance on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU. You should expect the battery to stay up to 39 hours and 20 minutes while on call. It also offers 126 hours of power on standby, 21 hours and 18 minutes of internet browsing, and 23 hours and 29 minutes of video streaming.

Samsung is not the best in fast charging, and you should expect the Galaxy S23 Ultra to be slower than high-end brands from China like Oppo and Xiaomi. Despite supporting 45W charging, there is no significant difference in charging speed between 45W and 25W chargers.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra also supports 2-ways wireless charging. It is WPC certified and also complies with Basic Power Profiler. The device can power transfer up to 15W according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review

In February 2023, Samsung released the Galaxy S23 Ultra alongside other members of the Galaxy S23 lineup. The device offers a minor upgrade over its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. In this review, we will look at some of the critical features of the S23 Ultra. We aim to provide you with all the essential information to identify the best Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Identifying the best for your needs and budget could be challenging due to the naming pattern and striking resemblance. Our experts have compiled this review to help you overcome the challenges and choose the most suitable Samsung Galaxy phone for your lifestyle and budget. To proceed, let’s quickly examine the Galaxy S23 Ultra specifications.

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Best Samsung Galaxy Phone in 2023

Are you looking for the most suitable Samsung Galaxy deal without breaking the bank? We’ve got some offers from the best providers in the country. Let’s look at the types of Samsung Galaxy deals to help you identify the best for your lifestyle. Here are the types of Samsung Galaxy deals you may consider.

Types of Samsung Galaxy Deals

Providers offer different types of Samsung Galaxy deals to meet the unique needs of various customers. In this section, we will be looking at some of these deals. Pay attention because understanding these deals is essential in identifying the best deal for you. The types of Samsung Galaxy deals offered by providers are:

1. Pay monthly contract

The pay monthly contract is a phone deal that allows you to purchase a new mobile phone on credit and pay in monthly installments. In the case of Samsung Galaxy, your preferred network provider will offer you your favourite Samsung Galaxy model in a deal that includes monthly data allowance and calls.

On the other hand, you will be required to make monthly payments for about two years to cover the cost of the smartphone. The smartphone will only become entirely yours after the expiration of your contract.

2. SIM only deal

A SIM-only deal is a mobile phone contract that involves only minutes, texts, and data at a prescribed monthly cost. Unlike a pay monthly phone contract, a SIM-only deal does not include a smartphone. All you will get is a SIM.

A SIM-only deal is preferable if you already have a SIM-Free mobile phone or a smartphone locked to your preferred provider. Consider a SIM-only deal if you do not wish to be tied to a particular provider for long.

3. No upfront cost deals

No upfront cost deal is a type of mobile phone contract that does not require making an initial payment towards the mobile phone purchase. When you sign up for a no-upfront cost deal, the actual cost of the device will be split according to the contract duration.

You will be required to make a monthly payment to cover the cost of the smartphone. This usually lasts for 24 months. While this could be an easier way to purchase a high-end smartphone, you may spend more on monthly installments.

4. Upfront payment contracts

Phone contracts with upfront payments involve paying a significant amount of the contract upfront. Unlike the no upfront cost contract, you must make some payments before being offered an upfront contract. However, the monthly payments are much less expensive than no upfront cost contracts.

Samsung Galaxy Deal Providers

Network providers offering Samsung Galaxy deals are in good supply. These providers include Three, EE, Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, VOXI, SMARTY, etc. However, before you choose a provider, verify that it has strong coverage in your area.

How to find the best Samsung Galaxy Deal

There are a few things that you need to consider when looking for the best Samsung Galaxy deal. The first is to analyse your needs and usage patterns, while the second is to consider your budget. What makes up the best depends on the ability to meet your unique needs. Therefore, your choice should be influenced by your needs and usage patterns.

Aside from the model that fits your unique needs, it is also essential to analyse different contract options and add-ons to identify the most suitable. For example, the best cannot be a contract with a low data cap and a device model that has low resolution if you are the type that often streams video content.

There are lots of Samsung Galaxy deals offered by different providers. While some may be cheaper than others, you should look beyond the cost when looking for the best deal. Analyse your unique needs and usage pattern and find the best that meets these needs without breaking the bank.

Usage Limit

50 Mb (average)

“Truly unlimited” broadband is perfect for heavy downloaders, student households or families sharing their connection because it does not apply either a fair usage policy or traffic management. This lets you download as much as you want, whenever you want, with your broadband speed acting as the only restricting factor. Some packages offer “unlimited broadband” without a fair usage policy but with traffic management to make sure that very heavy downloaders do not affect your connection at peak times.
