How to choose the best Broadband providers

  • November 20, 2024

Choosing the right provider is the most important decision when it comes to exploring a new broadband deal. Carefully picking your broadband provider will save you from a bad broadband commitment. While you are only si

Want to switch broadband providers or looking for a new broadband deal? Here are some key points to consider;

  • Ensure the provider you are opting for can meet your broadband needs
  • Explore broadband options. A broadband deal or a broadband bundle whichever works for you.
  • Compare broadband deals across various providers and choose a deal that resonates with your needs.

You can also explore some of our similar guides for further understanding like;

Internal linking (Broadband providers, How to switch providers, How to choose the best broadband bundles)

Here are the key factors that should be in place when selecting broadband providers to ensure you make an informed broadband decision.

  1. Understand your home internet usage

To choose the best broadband provider, you have to understand your internet needs. This means reviewing how you and your household use the internet, how many people are using the internet connection, and the speed requirements for the activities they use on the internet.

Assess your household usage by;

  • Number of users: The more the number of people using the internet simultaneously, the more the brand width your home requires. For large households, with four or more people, you can consider opting for providers that offer ultrafast broadband like Virgin media, BT, NOW, SKY,or TalkTalk. For users that live alone, you can opt for any provider that meets your broadband requirements.
  • Devices available: To better understand your home internet usage, you also need to consider the devices that are available in your home resulting in having multiple devices connected to your internet. Considering this will help you have an accurate internet usage.

Assess internet activities patterns

You should also identify different online activities you or your household engages in that requires varying amounts of bandwidth. Some of the activities are;

  • Browsing and Email: Basic web browsing and email checking require minimal bandwidth. Speeds of 1-5 Mbps are generally sufficient for these tasks.
  • Videos streaming: If more people in your household watching videos on platforms like YouTube, Netflix, or Hulu then you require more bandwidth. Watching a standard definition (SD) video needs 5-10 Mbps, while high definition (HD) videos requires 10-25 Mbps. For 4K or Ultra HD streaming, you may need speeds of 25 Mbps or higher.
  • Online Gaming: If there are online gamers in your household, gamers requires low latency and consistent speeds. While the bandwidth requirements can vary depending on the game, speeds of at least 10-20 Mbps are recommended for a smooth gaming experience.
  • Video Conferencing: For homes with remote workers or freelancers that requires applications like Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams. They require at least 10-15 Mbps for stable call connection.
  1. Broadband Package. Which broadband package is the best for you?

Do you prefer a standalone broadband deal or a bundled broadband deal? This is important to know when choosing broadband deals as broadband deals and it offerings varies depending on the provider and which aligns with your broadband needs. While some users may some users may preferf to opt for the basic standalone broadband, other may prefer to opt for a whole broadband package that combines a phone and tv service. To choose the right broadband package for you consider;

  • Do you enjoy entertainment? Or a little bit of a movie freak? Would you like to bundle Tv with your broadband service? Which service or channnelas would you like to include?. Bundling TV with your broadband as a person who enjoys entertainment will save you cost in the long run plus the convenience of dealing with one provice whilst using two services. For a broadband and TV package, you can consider providers like;
  • Virgin Media
  • TalkTalk TV
  • NOW Broadband
  • SKY
  • BT TV

If you want lots of entertainment channels, movies, and sport that includes on-demand content plus TV and settop box then you should consider VirginMedia and Sky. But if you are a cost conscious user but still want a lot of entertainment, you can consider TalkTalk TV and BT TV. These provider TV services offers YouView allows you include extra channels plus a recording feature that let you catch up on Tv shows and movies.

  • Do you make alot of calls? Would you like to bundle your phone with your broadband services? If you answered yes, consider opting for a broadband and phone package. For your call servicem, you can opt for pay as you go, evening & weekend calls, and inclusive anytime calls. For an extensive plan you can include mobile and international calling plans from some providers.

Here are some call plans you may want to consider;

  • For individuals that use the phone a lot, and are at home during the day: You can consider upgrading your package to include anytime calls. This means you can call anywhere in the UK at any time without incurring large fees.
  • If you work Monday – Friday, or make calls after 7pm: inclusive evening and weekend calls will suit you best.
  • If you have friends and family abroad: most providers have international calls available, often as an extra bolt-on. The countries these cover vary from company to company, so check your desired territory is covered before signing up.
  • If you don’t use a home phone, or prefer to stick to mobile: choose a pay as you go package. That means you’ll only get charged if you make a call over your landline – and if you don’t have or use a phone, that won’t happen.

You should also consider the following if you want a broadband package or a standalone deal.

  • Are you on benefits or universal credit? If so, you’ll want to keep your broadband costs low and only pay for the speed/services you really need. There are also Social Tariffs available for people on UC or other benefits.
  • If you run your own business from home, consider a business broadband deal. These can include static/fixed-IPs, webspace and email addresses that feature the name of your business, and business-grade security to keep sensitive information protected.
  • Maybe you’re a student looking for a time-specific package. The good news is that there are plenty of student broadband options available depending on your living situation and circumstances of study.
  • For senior citizens and other users who depend more on broadband than they do their mobile phones, it may be worth looking into certain home phone deals from different providers and deciding which of these best suits your needs.
  1. Broaband Speed

Consider the broadband speed you need. Broadband speed is separated into upload and download speeds. The latter is usually faster because most of your internet usage will be from downloads, including loading webpages and streaming music or video.

The importance of broadband speed will mainly depend on how you intend to use the internet. If you are online gaming or streaming in high definition, you will need faster broadband than if you were only using a single device to check social media. Your internet activity will also influence if you will be opting for ADSL, Superfast or Ultrafast broadband. We recommend superfast fibre optic broadband if you:

  • Want to stream TV and video in HD or 4K quality
  • Download large files from file-sharing sites
  • Play and download a lot of video games
  • Live in a shared house with lots of gadgets connected at the same time
  • Want the most reliable connection

Opt for ‘standard’ ADSL broadband if you:

  • Use the internet to email, check social media or browse websites
  • Stream video in HD quality
  • Want the lowest cost package

What else do i need to look out for when looking for Best Broadband Providers?

While there are a lot of providers to available, finding the best one could be a never ending research as they are all considered the best depending on users needs. Some providers include;

  • Virgin Media is known as one of the fastest providers
  • Plusnet has a great reputation for customer service
  • NOW Broadband and TalkTalk deals are very good value
  • Sky Broadband comes with excellent TV bundles
  • BT and Vodafone provide very reliable and robust connections with useful backups

However, you can narrow your search by looking for;

  • Price

For a basic internet connection, simply compare broadband in your area and go for the most cost-effective deal.

But ask yourself a few questions first: are you likely to move home before the contract is up? Do you need a faster connection? Are you in a rural area where standard ADSL broadband may be too slow to work efficiently?

Answering yes to any of these could make you regret taking out a broadband contract purely based on price.

  • Speed

While price is a good place to start, it’s not the be-all and end-all of choosing a broadband provider. Many of us go far beyond basic surfing and need speeds that’ll support movie nights, gaming sessions, and Netflix binging.

Using a broadband speed checker will let you know roughly what sort of download rate you’re currently getting. Then, you’ll be able to decide if regular broadband is enough, or if fibre would be better.

If you live in a rural area where it’s difficult to maintain a reliable hard-wired connection, you may need to consider satellite broadband for decent speeds.

Remember, contracts can seem long and lonely when you’re locked in with a bad connection, so make sure you get it right before signing up for anything.

  • Contract length

Since May 2011, Ofcom has banned broadband providers from tying customers into contracts longer than 24 months. Still, two years is a significant length of time.

If you’re not sure what your circumstances will be like in a year or so, a two-year broadband contract might not be the best fit for you, as you definitely don’t want to be paying any cancellation fees.

While most contracts are 12 or 18 months, there are short-term and even no-contract options available that could better suit your needs.

  • Download limits

Broadband contracts with no download limit are becoming increasingly common, but you may still find that cheaper deals limit the amount you can download.

If you choose an unlimited broadband deal, make sure you don’t go over the fair use limit – it could work out more expensive. Also, if you ever use your broadband to stream TV, your allowance will go down quicker.

  • Availability

The broadband available to you will be defined to some extent by where you live.

Remember to check your area before committing to any new broadband deal, otherwise you could end up paying for a contract that isn’t suitable for your needs.

Different broadband providers serve different areas. For example, you might not be able to get cable broadband services like Virgin Media if you’re in the countryside.

Other providers, like Plusnet, will be able to supply some areas of the country more affordably than others, so you might find better deals with different providers in different areas.

  • Security

Given how easy it is for viruses to infect computers through visiting dodgy sites, opening email attachments and downloading files, internet security should be top priority.

Protect your computer and data against these types of attacks by choosing the right broadband provider. Fortunately, as with wireless routers, security suites are included with most broadband packages nowadays.
