Broadband Providers
What to look out for when choosing broadband providers?
There are many providers to choose from, and different providers are known for particular services or broadband connection types. Each provider has their strengths and weaknesses in their services, which differentiate them in selling points and how they cater to different individuals’ needs.
There are some factors you should consider when choosing broadband providers;
Broadband Speed
Your broadband speed depends on your internet usage, and to have the right speed, you need to be sure your provider offers the speed you need. If you live in a small household, a broadband package that offers an average speed of 10-30Mbps will suffice if your internet usage only revolves around primary social media, web browsing, online shopping or email browsing.
With these, you can opt for broadband packages from providers like Direct Save Telecom or Onestream. But if you live in an enormous household with heavy internet users, you can consider opting for providers with fibre broadband packages, like Virgin Media, BT, or Hyperoptic. To ensure your broadband speed, run a broadband speed test while connected to your Wi-Fi or specifically ask your provider the speed they offer.
Customer Service
Before opting for a broadband provider, knowing how they treat their customers regarding urgent issues or technical faults is essential. Having a provider with good customer service enhances your overall experience, whether it involves addressing complaints, fixing connection issues, or clear communication. Have you had any issues with your broadband? Consult your provider for a quick response instead of Ofcom.
Broadband Cost
You are making the payment, so you are well aware of your budget. So it’s essential to keep your budget in mind when choosing a provider, Some providers can offer all the necessities you need with broadband, but the price may be higher than your budget and you regret it in the long run.
To find affordable broadband packages, you can check out TalkTalk and Plusnet providers; they are widely available and known to have excellent custom service. Also, to compare provider costs, check out the speed each provider is willing to offer their monthly prices.
Best broadband providers in the UK?
Despite the number of providers in the UK, each provider has what’s unique to them, their range of deals, bundles, and special offers, which makes it essential to define your broadband priority like speed, price, and contract length before picking a provider then look out for a provider that combines all your needs moderately in a package and go for it.
Also before signing with a provider, check for each provider’s customer reviews on Ofcom which will hasten your decision in picking a provider. You should also keep in mind that not all providers are widely available in the UK, After picking a provider, use the postcode checker to check the availability of the provider in your area.
- Fibre-Optic Broadband Providers
Most of the Broadband providers available in the UK offer fibre-optic services. However, there are two types of fibre optic connection available in the UK which are superfast broadband connection and ultrafast broadband. Fibre optic speeds range from 30Mbps to 1Gbps however the speed you get depends on what is available in your area and the fibre-optic connection you sign for.
Superfast Part-Fibre Broadband
Part-fibre is the widely available fibre-optic broadband connection, it is also called fibre-to-the-cabinet. It delivers a speed between 30-70Mbps which is known to be the slowest fibre-optic speed but faster than ADSL However, the speed is faster than ADSL, but the slowest speed fibre connection offers.
Full-Fibre Broadband
U\ltrafast full-fibre broadband, also known as FTTP fibre-to-the-premises. It operates on fibre-optic cables that connect directly to your home instead of telephone copper lines or part cables, which allows it to deliver a speed of 1Gbps and above. However, full-fibre isn’t widely available as superfast, which results in only 60% of the UK homes having access to it.
Who are the fastest Broadband providers?
There are broadband providers that can deliver broadband speed as high as 1Gbps of full-fibre connection which is considered the fastest available speed. However, the downside of the fastest provider is the limited availability of the provider and the broadband connection to most homes.
Virgin Media is known as the primary provider of full-fibre connections. Virgin Media upgraded its cable to 1Gbps for a faster internet experience. Openreach also provides FTTP connection for BT, Sky, EE, and Plusnet. Hyperoptic also delivers fibre-optic broadband for new blocks of flats.
Gigaclear also offers fibre-optic speed with a speed as high as 900Mbps using its network. Community fibre offers speed of up to 3Gbps but only delivers to specific areas in London. Providers like Vodafone and TalkTalk with Cityfibre as their broadband host, they also have a full-fibre connection but not up to 1Gbps speed.
Who are the Cheapest Broadband Providers?
You do not have to exceed your budget limit just because you need broadband. To remain within your broadband budget, there are cheap broadband providers you can consider signing up with and getting broadband at an affordable cost.
Popular providers that are known for their cheap broadband services are; TalkTalk, Plusnet, and Hhyperoptic. While some also offer discounted prices and freebie rewards, some providers are known to provide social tariff offers, like Virgin Media, Sky, BT, Vodafone, and TalkTalk.

Pros and Cons of BT Broadband
BT Broadband Installation
For BT set-up, this depends on your package, if you are an existing customer from a different provider or if you are a new customer. If you are an existing customer with part-fibre broadband, then setting up is simple as most are known to use Openreach network as their provider host, which is owned by BT group.
However, if you are switching with a full-fibre connection package, then it’s likely you are to be a provider without Openreach as its host like Virgin Media. If this is the case, then you need to contact your previous provider to cancel your service to switch to BT. If you are a new customer, then you just need to find your master socket to connect the Openreach modem and BT Hub to it.
BT Installation Fee
The BT connection fee as of September 2023 is around £140, which covers the engineering work of your connection in your home or at the exchange cabinet.
However, if you recently purchased a telephone service from BT without a damaged wiring socket and a functional dial tone, then you do not have to worry about installation fees.
How long is BT installation time?
If you are switching from a provider, then you should prepared to wait for two weeks to have a connection in your home. But if that’s not the case, then a few days will do, but this also depends on where you live (urban, suburban, or rural) and engineer availability in your area.
But in special cases where you are signing up for a full-fibre connection that involves an engineer then your installation time would usually take between one to three hours.

However, its Ultrafast and Gigafast packages (average speeds of 145Mbps, 500Mbps and 900Mbps) aren’t as widely available. They’re available to around a quarter or a third of UK homes.
