How to compare Energy Prices?

To compare energy prices, there are processes you need to follow but bear in mind that you may only come across a few cheaper deals than the Energy Price Cap. But you could still switch without the intention of saving cost especially if you are not satisfied with suppliers’ services.

With our energy comparison tool, you can compare prices by;

  • Provide your postcode. The tool will allow you to select your location. For a better result, provide the details of your plan.

  • Compare energy plans. This will show you the list of energy plans available to opt for. This will also include the annual total cost of the plan depending on your energy usage.

  • Confirm Energy switching.  After checking out the available energy plans and picking a deal that most aligns with your energy needs, then you should confirm your switching. After your confirmation, we will complete the rest of the switching process which will be completed within 5 days.

How do I Compare Energy Suppliers?

When switching suppliers, it’s important to consider your energy needs and look out for a supplier whose offerings align with your needs.

Here are some factors to consider when switching suppliers.

  • Most customers consider the overall cost of the supplier they are switching to rather than comparing the supplier itself.
  • The energy market does not have room to sustain smaller suppliers or cheaper suppliers. Making it important for them to seek the best energy supplier available.
  • Customer service is important. Consider the customer service of the energy supplier you intend to switch to.
  • The available energy supplier in the market offers some perks and probably incentives. You may want to explore them.

After considering all these, it’s important to keep in mind that some switching options are only limited to existing customers. This can limit your choices.

How does Switching Energy Suppliers work?

Energy supplier switches are mostly hassle-free as most suppliers are under the Energy Switch Guarantee. Which provides an easy switching process for customers. Generally, when it comes to switching suppliers, you do not need to get involved, your new supplier just needs to reach out to your old supplier to start the switching process.

But before that, the typical process goes like this;

Input your information, including your postcode, current energy supplier, estimated energy usage, and whether you prefer to compare dual fuel, gas-only, or electricity-only options.

After entering your details, you can view the various energy deals available. Compare these options with your current tariff, taking into account factors such as price, exit fees, tariff duration, and type. If you find a deal that suits you, you can proceed with switching your tariff. And your current supplier will handle the rest.

How long does it take to switch suppliers?

A switching process takes place within 5 working days. However, in cases where your supplier requires other information, the process could extend past five days. Nevertheless, you still have the right to cancel your switch within 14 days.

If at any point you change your mind and want to cancel your switching within the 14 days after the initial 5 switching process days have passed, then you are responsible for any energy consumed during your period with the temporary supplier until your energy is transferred again.

Or you can opt to wait until after the cooling-off period has ended for the switch to complete. The switch should typically be finalized within 15 days.

However, your new supplier might offer you the flexibility to select a switch date that is up to 28 days in advance. Keep in mind that during your switching period, the Energy Switch Guarantee allows for a smooth switching without losing service.

Factors to consider when Switching Energy

When switching energy, there are some factors you may want to consider. Here are some of the factors we think you should consider;

  • Opt for a deal you can afford: When considering switching your energy supplier or deal, ensure the deal you are opting for is what you can afford in the long run to avoid running into debt or being unable to pay your bills on time.
  • Consider the exit fees involved: This is important to consider, especially if at any point you want to switch. Switching outside your cooling period will likely require you to an pay exit fee. While most tariff requires an exit fee, some do not. But be sure to review the terms of the tariff you are signing.
  • Consider the plan length: Most energy tariff period lengths range from 12-24 months. Being in a plan does not mean a fixed price, during this period, the price cap fluctuates. Therefore you may want to take into consideration how long you want to lock to a plan with an unstable price.
  • Consider more than just the direct debit amount: Monthly payments via direct debit are often estimated based on your yearly energy usage, which may not represent the actual cost. Evaluate the unit rate and standing charge to calculate your total energy expenses accurately, and compare these figures with your current payment scheme to identify any discrepancies.

Stay informed: You can achieve this by regularly monitoring the energy market and comparing available deals. Signing up for alerts can help you stay up-to-date on market trends and seize opportunities when good deals arise.

Why should I switch my Supplier?

There are several reasons why you may want to consider switching your energy and gas supplier;

  • Customer Service: This could be one of the reasons you want to switch services especially if you are dissatisfied with the service you are receiving from your current supplier, then you may want to switch to a service that offers better customer service standards.
  • A Better Deal: Regularly comparing energy prices and assessing different suppliers annually has the potential to save you hundreds of dollars on your gas and electricity expenses. Our ongoing monitoring of the energy market ensures that you can access a deal that meets your needs.
  • Greener Energy: This is opting for energy that comes from a renewable source which is what most energy companies offer. However, if your current supplier does not offer it then you may want to switch to a company that offers a green energy tariff.

Best Energy Tariff

There are various energy tariffs you have to compare when trying to switch. This can be a difficult task in knowing which one to opt for. To make it easier, this is an explanation of how each one of them works.

 1. Standard Variable Tariff

This is an energy supplier default tariff as you will always find yourself on this tariff when your plan with another tariff ends or if you are just switching to a supplier. SVT is usually the most expensive gas and electricity tariff.

This is because the unit rate prices can change from time to time just like wholesale energy prices. However, the energy price cap regulates the maximum amount you can be charged making it a reliable tariff option if fixed tariff seems too expensive.

Pros of SVT

  • Do not require exit fees. You can switch whenever you want without incurring charges.
  • Unit rate prices are unstable. It increases and decreases.
  • The energy price cap limits the maximum a supplier can charge.

Cons of SVT

  • It is the most expensive tariff.
  • Maximum energy price cap is charged in standard variable tariff.

 2. Fixed Rate Tariff

With fixed rate tariff, it sets a fixed amount on pay per unit rate and your daily standing charge so you do not have to worry about your energy prices going up and down. It will only increase or decrease depending on your energy usage. But while it has a fixed price that protects you from a price increase, you do not get to benefit from the price decrease.

 3. Prepayment Energy Tariff

Prepayment is also known Pay-as-you-go meter. It is a type of energy meter you need to add credit before it is ready for use. The payment can be done through a key, a token or a smartcard that can be topped up online, at a local store, or over the phone

Pros of Prepayment Energy Tariff

  • You have control over the amount and how often you pay for your tariff
  • A prepayment tariff helps individuals in debt to easily pay off their debts over some time in an agreed amount.
  • Controls your energy bill which helps you avoid an accumulated large bill.

Cons

  • If you are unable to top up, you can get disconnected from both energy(gas and electricity)
  • Access to limited options to choose from. The cheapest fixed deals are usually for standard direct debit customers.
  • Topping up could become a hassle if you are unable to do it through an app.

Dual Fuel Tariff

This is a tariff for having both energy from the same supplier. That is your electricity and gas are sourced from the same supplier and you only have to deal with a single supplier for your energy bill. Which is easier than having separate suppliers and could be cheaper but not always. Therefore, you may want to compare and shop around to find the cheapest deals.

Pros of Dual Fuel Tariff

  • A point of contact for your energy bills. You do not have to contact two different suppliers.
  • More convenient. You have just a single tariff to manage your gas and electricity bills. Meaning you get to spend less time managing the two.
  • One meter. You can use one meter for your gas and electricity.

Green Tariff
Opting for a green tariff means you are opting for a renewable energy source which is environmentally friendly and has no carbon footprint. While green energy is cleaner and better for our health, it’s not the cheapest to opt for.

But if price is your consideration for choosing a tariff, then you may want to consider other energy tariffs.

Economy 7 Tariffs

Economy 7 tariff works with peak and off-peak periods. With this, you have to pay two different prices for your electricity. That is the 17-hour peak period during the day and the 7-hour off-peak period at night.

You will also require an economy 7 meter that will measure the energy you use during the day and what you use at night.

Ways in Reducing Energy Bill

Here are some measures to take to help lower your energy bill;

  • Unplug unused appliances: Most appliances still consume energy even when they are turned off but plugged in(standby mode). Unplug appliances or make use of a power strip to easily disconnect multiple devices when they are not in use.
  • Opt for energy-sufficient bulbs: Switch to LED lights instead of halogen bulbs. This will use less energy and last longer compared to the usual bulbs.
  • Proper insulation for your home: Ensure your home is well-insulated, especially the attic, walls, and floors. This will help maintain a proper room temperature. You can invest in draught excluders and thicker curtains to achieve this.
  • Energy-efficient Appliances: Replace old and inefficient appliances with energy-efficient models. This appliances includes your refrigerators, dishwashers, or washing machines.
  • Smart Thermostat: Install a smart thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on your preference. This will generally help to optimize energy use for heating and cooling.
  • Energy Audit: Conduct a home energy audit to understand how much energy you use and what consumes the most energy. While many utility company offers energy audits, you can also conduct one yourself by getting a smart meter.
  • Invest in Energy-efficient windows: These energy-efficient windows could be double or triple panes, low emissivity coatings, and insulated frames. These windows can improve insulation and reduce heating and cooling costs.
  • Use Natural Lighting: Take advantage of natural lighting during the day to reduce the need for your bulb lighting. Stick to opening curtains and raising blinds to allow sunlight in.

How can I switch Gas and Electricity if I am moving?

If you are changing your address, you can either close your current energy account or inquire about transferring your service to your new property. Whichever decision you make, it is essential to contact your supplier at least two days before your move to notify them and provide your new address. This ensures they know where to send your final bill.

Additionally, it is advisable to take meter readings and share them with your current supplier to keep records in case there are billing disputes. Upon moving into the new property, you will need to take readings again and settle your final bill accordingly. It’s crucial to identify the energy company that supplies your new address.

What is a Dual Fuel Tariff?

Opting for a dual fuel tariff indicates that both your gas and electricity services are provided by the same supplier. If you plan to use an online energy comparison tool, you can select the ‘Gas & Electricity (Dual Fuel)’ option to facilitate your comparison process.

Certain gas and electricity providers may provide a discount specifically for switching to a dual fuel tariff, and any applicable discounts will be clearly outlined in the tariff details.

It’s important to note that the most favourable gas and electricity deal might not necessarily be the cheapest one. Therefore, it’s advisable to also compare the prices of purchasing gas and electricity separately before making a decision.

Can I get a Smart meter if I switch gas and electricity?

The availability of a smart meter depends on the progress of your gas and electricity supplier’s smart meter programme. Each energy company is responsible for managing its rollout of smart meters.

You can inquire with your current energy supplier about obtaining a smart meter, and they will inform you about the feasibility and timing. When switching to a new tariff, ensure that it aligns with your energy needs and offers the best deal for you.

How often do energy prices change?

Energy prices are in a constant state of flux, responding to shifts in market supply and demand as well as fluctuations in wholesale costs. The Ofgem Energy Price Cap, updated every three months, considers inflation and the fundamental expenses of energy. It sets limits on the unit prices of gas and electricity for households with dual-fuel tariffs paying via direct debit. However, the total amount you pay is contingent upon your actual energy consumption.

How can I get cheap gas and electricity deals?

How can I get cheap gas and electricity deals?

Due to the current condition of the energy market, many customers may encounter challenges in finding affordable gas and electricity gas and electricity deals. The prices of energy have drastically increased, resulting in deals being more expensive compared to previous years.

However, for most customers looking for a cheap gas and electricity plan, a standard variable tariff may be your best option. with the cap set at £1,928 from January 1 to March 31, 2024, and reduced to £1,690 from April 1 to June 30. However, fixed deals could provide price stability and certainty for some customers.

What differentiates a Fixed and Variable-rate Tariff?

Fixed-rate tariffs assure that the cost per unit of energy remains constant throughout your plan, typically spanning one or two years. This guarantees that your rate remains unchanged even if your supplier decides to increase prices during this period.

While variable-rate tariffs operate differently. Under this type of tariff, the price per unit of energy can fluctuate based on how your supplier responds to changes in the wholesale energy market. It’s worth noting that suppliers rarely reduce prices; instead, they commonly raise rates.

Do I need to cancel my Direct Debit when I switch?

Once you have switched your energy provider, you do not need to contact your previous supplier. They should automatically issue a final bill and close your old account once any outstanding balance is settled. Although cancelling your Direct Debit is not necessary, you may choose to do so through your bank for assurance against potential charges. However, be sure to settle your final bill before making any changes.

Will I have an energy interruption when I switch?

No, you won’t. Your gas and electricity will not be interrupted in any situation. Even if your supplier goes out of business and you are transferred to another supplier. You will always remain connected as a result of most energy suppliers signing up for the Energy Switch Guarantee which makes switching energy hassle-free making it unlikely for customers to encounter any inconveniences.

How do I switch energy if I'm moving home?

If you want to move out and you intend to take your current tariff with you, then you should inform your supplier. But keep in mind that depending on where you are moving to, you may be able to take your current tariff along. If not, then you can switch from your current supplier to any supplier available at your new location. To avoid paying for more than your energy usage, record your meter reading when you are moving out and also the meter reading of the new property you are moving to.

If I change my mind about switching, what are my options?

There are several options you can explore if you change your mind about your switching during the cooling-off period.

  • You can explore the possibility of switching to another tariff with your new supplier by contacting them for details.
  • You may consider returning to your previous supplier on a tariff that matches the terms of your previous deal. Contact your old supplier promptly as this option might have a limited availability.
  • Alternatively, you can switch to a different energy provider altogether. Reach out to the provider you wish to join.

In all cases, it’s your responsibility to inform the suppliers of your decision and specify your preferences.

If you opt to cancel the switch without pursuing any of the options, you will automatically be placed on a standard variable tariff with your new supplier. You are then free to switch providers or tariffs without incurring any penalties. Irrespective of your choice, please note that you will be billed for the energy consumed during the cooling-off period.

What are the Benefits of Smart Meter?

With a smart meter, you can be assured of having a accurate meter readings. It also ensures you are you are only paying for what you use as it automatically send your usage readings to your supplier. Having a smart meter also helps you manage your home energy effectively

“Truly unlimited” broadband is perfect for heavy downloaders, student households or families sharing their connection because it does not apply either a fair usage policy or traffic management. This lets you download as much as you want, whenever you want, with your broadband speed acting as the only restricting factor. Some packages offer “unlimited broadband” without a fair usage policy but with traffic management to make sure that very heavy downloaders do not affect your connection at peak times.
